The week of November 12-18 marks Nurse Practitioner Week in Canada. This week provides us with the the opportunity to raise awareness about the role of the nurse practitioner (NP) in our health care system and celebrate the contributions Nurse Practitioners make for our patients and families at Providence Health Care.

Advanced age, high rates of chronic diseases, mental health issues, the opioid crisis and dispersed settlement contributes to complicated and costly health care delivery in British Columbia. Nurse Practitioners were introduced to British Columbia in 2005, however, the role has been in place for over 50 years. To be efficient and effective, our province introduced NPs as providers with a broad set of competencies to tackle these challenges.

NPs are advanced practice nurses with advanced education at the masters or doctoral level with skills to independently assess, diagnose, treat and manage health conditions of patients from across the lifespan. NPs are licensed and regulated to order and interpret diagnostic tests, blood work, prescribe medications, perform procedures and make referrals to specialists, positioning the NP as an ideal provider to address the major concerns of those seeking health care. In fact, NPs' role is so suitable that communities in British Columbia have embraced NPs as primary care providers in many communities around the province. In addition to the widely recognized role of NPs in primary care, NPs also work throughout the larger health care system, in acute, critical care, community and residential care teams and in specialty programs. NPs are valuable members of our health care teams.

At Providence Health Care we are fortunate to have Nurse Practitioners integrated into the following programs and services:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Internal Medicine
  • Cardiac Surgery
  • Heart Function Clinic
  • Atrial Fibrillation Clinic
  • Emergency (SPH and MSJ)
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Nephrology (Hemodialysis and Post Transplant)
  • Hematology (Hemophilia program)
  • Urban Health (Crosstown Clinic, Granville Youth Centre)

Join us in celebrating National Nurse Practitioner Week!

We look forward to seeing future Nurse Practitioners in programs and services at Providence Health Care.
