Over 120 residents, staff and families gathered between morning and afternoon sessions at Van Dusen Gardens on Tuesday, November 14, to hear Dr. David Sheard speak about the importance of emotional connections in caring for people with dementia.

In the afternoon, residents, staff and family members worked together to create Change Day pledges for their tables.

Celebrating the power of every person

Change Day celebrates the power of patients, caregivers, health care providers, students, volunteers – everyone! – to have a positive impact on our health system. It's a global movement that happened in BC for the first time in 2015, inspiring thousands of pledges – over 7,800, in fact – from every corner of the province, and every area of care.

Change Day BC is back for 2017, and is being celebrated today, November 17!

And what better group to embrace a day committed to driving change and improving care than the staff, residents and families involved with our residential redevelopment vision of changing residential care from an institutionalized medical model of care to a social model where emotional connections matter most, residents direct each moment and home is not a place, it is a feeling.

Below are just a few of the Change Day pledges that came out of Tuesday's session.

Everyone left Tuesday's event with their personal pledge in hand, and 55 pledges that were made that day have also been submitted by Sonia Hardern, PHC performance improvement consultant, to the BC Patient Safety Quality Council (BCPSQC) to add to the Council's collection of provincial pledges.

Congratulations to everyone who has committed an act of change or to trying something new, in order to improve care for the patients of British Columbia, and beyond!
