UpnGo with ParticipACTION pilot project at the Residential Sites

For the past 6 weeks, staff at Brock Fahrni, Holy Family, Langara & Youville/Parkview were offered a chance to participate in a work-based activity pilot project.

The BC Ministry of Health supported initiative by ParticipACTION, aims to get staff thinking and moving for their own health benefit, while at work. Over 250 staff at the 4 sites took up the challenge offered by UpnGo with ParticipACTION, to find short periods during their work day to go for a walk or choose the stairs over the elevator, to get their heart rate up and reap the physical and mental health benefits of taking an active break.

A friendly competition between the 4 sites added to the fun of the pilot with staff logging their steps and activities on the on-line platform and earning rewards for their activity. The top site, with the most steps, was Youville. Holy Family Hospital had the most staff register and staff at HFH could often be heard saying “It’s time to UpnGo for a walk!”

PHC was the only Health Care facility participating and one of only 5 organizations in the Lower Mainland asked to be part of this unique pilot. The pilot ended last week and now the UpnGo with ParticipACTION team will regroup and evaluate the program. Thank you to all the staff who participated and who persevered through all of the challenges of a pilot with patience and good humour. Staff participation and input has contributed to making the UpnGo with Participaction work-based activity program, closer to being ready for the rest of Canada.
